A Week of Cuban Culture

The University of Miami’s Federacion de Estudiantes Cubanos (FEC) student organization hosts a weeklong series of cultural events for the community.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (February 14, 2014) — The Federación de Estudiantes Cubanos (FEC) is a non-profit student organization at the University of Miami, and promotes many aspects of the rich Cuban culture to the university community and the community at large.
“A Week of Cuban Culture” is FEC’s largest event, showcasing the Cuban culture through food, art and music.
The week spreads awareness of Cuban culture through the words of invited Cuban community leaders, the rich flavor of spices, the enchanting colors of art and the intoxicating rhythms of music.

The events include:

Throughout the week – Jose Marti’s Service Drive
FEC will be collecting toiletries for the children of the Overtown Youth Center. Drop-off bins will be available at every event.

Friday, February 28 – Abuelita’s Breakfast
A traditional Cuban breakfast kicks off the week, served at 9:30 a.m. at the University Center (UC) Rock Plaza.

Sunday, March 2 – Bar-B-Qban

At 1 p.m. on the Foote Green, FEC members, family, alumni, and the UM community are invited to a Field Day.

Monday, March 3 – Tropicana, presented by the Rathskeller Advisory Board
Continue the celebration as the Rat is transformed into a Cuban paradise. The event begins at 12 p.m.

Monday, March 3 – Opening Ceremonies
Ceremonies open at 5 p.m. at the UC Rock Plaza. The event includes performances, award presentations, and food trucks.

Monday, March 3 – Canes Night Live presents Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights
After opening ceremonies, CNL presents their own Cuban flare with a night of dance on the Foote Green at 8 p.m.

Tuesday, March 4 – Azucar and Fashion Show
At 12 p.m. on the Student Center Complex (SCC) Patio, this event provides a taste of different desserts and traditional baked goods that the Cuban culture has to offer, while also showcasing guayabera designs modeled by student leaders and administration.

Tuesday, March 4 – Pedro Pan Exodus Forum
This event explores the Pedro Pan Exodus in Cuba. It is a forum for students interested in learning about this aspect of Cuban history from Pedro Pan children presenting their experiences. The event begins at 6 p.m. in the Student Activities Center Ballrooms and will feature a Q&A with Pedro Pans.

Wednesday, March 5 – Discover Cuba
“Discover Cuba” will start at 12 p.m. on the SCC Patio. A variety of stations will promote and exhibit the Cuban culture and history, along with live cooking demonstrations.

Wednesday, March 5 – Domino Ef-FEC-t

At 6 p.m., FEC will host a friendly domino tournament on the SAC Moss Terrace. Compete, win prizes, and learn who will be declared domino champion at the end of the night.

Thursday, March 6 – Cuban Carnival
The week’s largest event, the Cuban Carnival, will be held on Thursday, March 6 at noon on the SCC Patio. The Carnival provides an explosion of Cuban flavor through a series of different activities. Various vendors from the local Miami community will display Cuban art and artifacts, and food will be served.
