November 15, 2012 — With the MAIA Study Abroad opportunities students may take classes – up to a semester – at universities strategically located around the world in Europe, Africa, and South America. Currently we offer two week summer programs in Argentina, France, Ghana, and Russia. Our Summer Programs are open to MAIA students, as well as qualified Undergraduate and Graduate students.

If you are a MAIA student be sure to take advantage of our Semester Programs in the Czech Republic and Russia. Additionally, MAIA offers Practicum opportunities in the Galapagos Islands, Guatemala, and Peru. Don't miss out! Request more info today!

MAIA Study Abroad Opportunities

April 07, 2011 — Latin America in the World: Summer Course in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Dr. Ivan Petrella holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (BSFS) from Georgetown University, his Masters in Theological Studies (MTS) and Ph.D. in Religious Studies and Law from Harvard University.
Dr. Petrella is an Associate Professor with the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Miami. Dr. Petrella is the author of The Future of Liberation Theology: an Argument and Manifesto, Beyond Liberation Theology: a Polemic, editor of Latin American Liberation Theology: The Next Generation and co-executive editor of the "Reclaiming Liberation Theology" book series. His areas of expertise include modern theology and philosophy, social theory, and the interplay between religion and politics.

Africa in the World: Summer course in Ghana
Dr. Edmund Abaka is a graduate of the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, West Africa, and earned his Masters in European History from the University of Guelph in Canada and his Ph.D. in African History from York.
Dr. Abaka is Director of the University of Miami’s, Africana Studies Program. Professor Abaka teaches African history survey classes (History of Africa to 1800 and Africa Since 1800); he offers specialized courses on Southern Africa, Egypt and the Nile Valley, West Africa Since 1800, Pan-Africanism, Africa and the African Diaspora, Slavery and Emancipation, European Expansion in Africa: Colonialism and Imperialism, and African Historiography. His research interests cover commodities and trade in pre-colonial West Africa, Slavery and Emancipation, and the African Diaspora. He has published a number of articles and book chapters on kola, the colonial period in African history, and African youth. His book "Kola is God's Gift": Agricultural Production, Export Initiatives and the Kola Industry of Asante and the Gold Coast, c. 1820-1950. He is currently working on a number of projects: The Hausa Diaspora in Asante and the Gold Coast 1800-1950, "The Land of Ras Tafari Makonnen": A Socio-Cultural History of Ethiopia, The Gold Coast Forts and Castles as Frontiers of the Euro-African Encounter, and The Return Migration of African-Americans to Africa in the 20th century. He is presently working on Youth/Students and Political Activism (including Popular Political Protest) in Ghana (1960-2000).

Russia in the World: Summer Course in St. Petersburg, Russia
Dr. Ralph S. Clem holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography from San Diego State College and his Master’s and Ph.D. in Geography and Soviet Studies with distinction from Columbia University.
Dr. Ralph S. Clem is a Professor with the MAIA Program. He has had a long and distinguished career as a scholar of political and social geography, specializing in Eurasia and the former USSR. He has been a Fellow at the Kennan Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and Columbia’s Harriman Institute. Author, co-author and editor of several books as well as numerous articles and conference papers, his research focuses on the relationship between population change and development, and issues related to immigration, fertility, mortality, and the labor force, especially in ethnically pluralistic societies. He also conducts research on problems of regional development as they relate to policy and the electoral geography of Russia and Ukraine. During his career with the USAF, Major General Ralph S. Clem has been as a special agent with the Office of Special Investigations; an intelligence officer and Chief of Intelligence for three Air Force Reserve flying units; and a senior intelligence staff officer and strategic air analyst with the National Security Agency, as well as mobilization assistant to the Chief of the Air Force Reserve. He has been awarded numerous commendations and decorations, including the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit and the Vietnam Service Medal. As a member of MAIA’s faculty, Professor Clem lectures as well as works closely with MAIA’s graduate students in their explorations of world affairs, international organizations, economics and development, national security and human security issues.

Global Warming Policy in the European Union: Summer Course in Paris, France
Dr. George Gonzalez holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Florida International University and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Southern California.
Dr. Gonzalez is an Associate Professor with the Department of Political Sciences at the University of Miami. Before joining the University of Miami, Dr. Gonzalez was an Assistant Professor at King’s College and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. His specialties are American Politics, U.S. Public Policy, and Environmental Politics and Policy. His research has focused on areas of interest including Environmental politics, U.S. clean air policy, Global warming, and U.S. Natural resources policies. Dr. Gonzalez has published a number of publications including Urban Sprawl, Global Warming, and the Empire of Capital; The Politics of Air Pollution: Urban Growth, Ecological Modernization, and Symbolic Inclusion; "The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan: Economic or Environmental Sustainability?", Polity; "Urban Sprawl, Global Warming, and the Limits of Ecological Modernization". Environmental Politics; "The Conservation Policy Network, 1890-1910: The Development and Implementation of 'Practical' Forestry", Polity.
