Q: When I try to open the Ascent software, it does not open or I get the error message "Unable to connect to license server". What is causing this problem?

A: Microsoft Net Framework 2.0 is causing conflicts with the Ascent software.

User on Ascent 6.1 could not open Batch Manager, Scan, etc. Also Batch Class would not publish. The user may be unable to open the Ascent software or they may get this error message:

Error: [7001] Acliclnt:
Unable to connect to license server. The License server may be down or the network may have problems. (Index was outside the bounds of array.)

How To Troubleshoot:

Check to see that the servers were started by going to:Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services

Look for the following to say started:

  • Ascent Capture Service
  • MSSQL$AscentCapture

Uninstalling .NET framework 2.0 will solve the problem

Kofax has a workaround to get Ascent 5.5, 6.x and 7.0 working with .NET 2.0
Refer to the following Kofax Knowledgebase Article

Q: Are any workarounds available for the incompatibility issue between Ascent Capture 6.x/7.0 and Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0?

A: Follow the following instructions

If using Ascent Capture 7.0:

This issue is resolved with the Ascent Capture 7.0 Service Pack 1 release. It is available from Kofax’s Ascent Capture 7.x English Patch Downloads Library web page: Download Library Link

If using Ascent Capture 6.x:

The recommended action is to remove .NET Framework 2.0.

In instances where this may not be possible, an unsupported workaround is available:

This workaround consists of the use of “.exe.config” files. These files redirect Ascent Capture to use the .NET Framework 1.1 for licensing, thus allowing Ascent Capture to co-exist with .NET Framework 2.0. The files are technically in XML format, but can be created as plain ASCII text. As a consequence, these files can be created using an ASCII text editor such as NotePad. A config file for each Ascent Capture module affected would have to be created. Each file would contain the same exact information:

Once the file had been created it would be saved with the following filenames:

ACXMLAI.exe.config - XML Auto Import
Admin.exe.config - Administration
DBUtil.exe.config - Database Utility
fp.exe.config - Recognition
Index.exe.config - Validation
KfxPdf.exe.config - PDF Generator
Ocr.exe.config - OCR Full Text
ops.exe.config - Batch Manager
Qc.exe.config - Quality Control
Release.exe.config - Release
Scan.exe.config - Scan
SepSheet.exe.config - Separator Sheet
Verify.exe.config - Verification

These files should be placed in the same folder in which the Ascent Capture workstation executables (admin.exe, fp.exe, scan.exe and so on) presently reside. All Ascent Capture modules should be terminated prior to implementing this modification to the system. On the workstation PC’s, the files would be placed into the Ascent/BIN folder. On the server machine, these files would be located under the AscentSS/ServLib/Bin folder.

Q: When I publish my batch class in Ascent I get this error: "Unable to export batch catalog XML file". How can I resolve this problem?

A: Follow these steps to correct the problem:

  1. Do a search in your PC and locate the "BatchCat.dtd" file (or check your \(ServerName)\AscentSV\BatchDB\Catalog directory)
  2. Edit the file with Notepad
  3. Look for the section that starts with: !ELEMENT Functions EMPTY
  4. Go to the line: !ATTLIST Functions Workflow (0|1) "0"
  5. Make sure there is a "0" between quotes in the above line. If there isn't, type "0" in between the quotes
  6. Save the file and try to republish again

Q: Whenever I try to import an Ascent file I get this error message that stops the import: "Release script missing ImagePlus WAF release".

A: Go through the following steps:

  • Go to: START>ALL PROGRAMS>Ascent Capture 4.0>WAF Workstation Setup
  • If you see the following screen, click on Browse...
  • Then go to C:\Program Files\Ascent\Cap\WAFRel\bin and click on WAFREL.EXE

You may get a workstation ID window. Always accept the default.

To be properly setup, when you go to: START>ALL PROGRAMS>Ascent Capture 4.0>WAF Workstation Setup
the icon should have a little wrench just like what you saw when you selected WAFREL.EXE.
