This University of Miami Employee Handbook contains useful information concerning working at the University. This is not a legal document; it is informational and general in nature and is not intended to create an employment contract for any definite term nor alter the traditional at-will employment relationship. The purpose of the employee handbook is to provide University employees with a readily available source of information and guidance. Because the information contained in the handbook is general in nature, more specific information should be obtained from the University's Policies and Procedures. The policies stated in this handbook are subject to change at any time at the sole discretion of the University. From time to time you may receive updated information concerning changes in the policy. However, the manual is available on the website for your reference. Any questions not answered in the manual may be referred to your supervisor or to the appropriate Human Resources or Faculty Affairs office.
The University of Miami's mission is to educate and nurture students, to create knowledge, and to provide service to our community and beyond. Committed to excellence and proud of the diversity of our University family, we strive to develop future leaders of our nation and the world.
Each individual employed by the University is expected to be sensitive and responsive to the individual needs of our colleagues and clients, who include students, patients, faculty, administrators, visitors, and other staff members. To support this philosophy and achieve the single high standard to which the University of Miami is dedicated, each employee is expected to perform at the highest levels of professionalism. This can be achieved by respecting each person's right to quality service, confidentiality, and self-respect; outwardly displaying a positive, helpful attitude no matter how demanding or inconvenient requests may seem; and performing all duties in a courteous, prompt, and professional manner while displaying a business-like appearance.
It is the policy of the University of Miami that no person within the jurisdiction thereof shall, on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, veteran status, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination or harassment (including all forms of sexual harassment and sexual violence) under any program or activity of the University, regardless of whether such program or activity occurs on-campus or off-campus.
Discrimination is prohibited in all of the following areas: recruitment, hiring, promotions, demotions, transfers, layoffs, terminations, selection for training and educational assistance, rates of pay, benefits, and other forms of compensation and conditions of employment. Retaliation or subsequent harassment against an employee who files a complaint or participates in a complaint investigation is prohibited. The University has an established affirmative action plan; the Equality Administration Office is responsible for coordinating and implementing the University's Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Program.
