Team Captain Information

As a UM DCC Team Captain, your role is to lead the fundraising effort for your department. Here’s a plan for a successful fundraising effort.

Step 1: Recruit and Register Team Members

Make a list of potential team members. Invite everyone, and once they sign up, ask them to invite their family, friends, neighbors and coworkers. Also, market your team through an office-wide e-mail, on office bulletin boards, and via social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).

Follow these steps to register:

  • Visit RideDCC.com
  • Review the available routes
  • Click Register in the upper right hand corner of the site
  • Follow prompts and answer necessary registration questions.

Step 2: Set Goals to Fundraise

All rides carry a registration fee of $150. This registration fee includes: in-ride and post-ride food, beverages, medical supplies, mechanical assistance, transportation for you and your bike from all finish lines to all starting points for rides beginning and ending in different locations, Dolphins Cycling Challenge ride jersey, commemorative water bottle, and two (2) tickets to the Miami Dolphins DCC celebratory game on November 25th vs. Seattle Seahawks. An on-field ceremony will be held to at this game honoring cyclists and participants in the DCC.
In addition to the non-refundable $150 registration fee, riders must also commit to the fundraising amount below before the fundraising deadline of November 18th, 2012:

  • Miami Homecoming Loop (40 Miles)
$250 for first-time riders, students, out-of-state riders. All others $500

While the goal for each rider may seem lofty at first, garnering support for your efforts towards the fight against cancer is as simple as asking. Here is an example of you can raise $500 in one week:

  • Start with your own contribution: $25
  • E-mail 5 friends asking them to match your donation: $125
  • Ask four family members to contribute $25 each: $100
  • Ask your employer to contribute $50
  • Ask five co-workers to contribute $10 each: $50
  • Ask 10 neighbors and/or businesses you frequent (dentist, dry cleaner, hair stylist, doctor, etc.) for $15 each: $150

TOTAL $500

Creative Fundraising Ideas

  • Ask a different person per day to donate to you or your team
  • Send an e-mail to your entire address book asking them to contribute to this important cause. Remember to be mindful of people’s privacy and blind copy their e-mail address by inserting it into the BCC address field.
  • Challenge your team members to raise money towards Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the fight against cancer with different team building initiatives, such as a friendly fundraising competition within their organizations
  • Utilize social media to promote the ride, your team and the cause. Provide status updates and share photos of your team and its DCC III efforts

Step 3: Thank Your Supporters

Be sure to send a thank you note or e-mail to your supporters. After the event, a letter informing them how the event went and the total amount you raised would be a nice gesture.
