Civic and Community Engagement Staff Member Presented with Award

On October 20, 2011 Mara D’Amico was awarded the 2011 AmeriCorps VISTA Recognition through Florida Campus Compact. Mara served as an AmeriCorps*VISTA from July 2010 through July 2011 with the Center for Community Involvement at Miami Dade College’s Hialeah and West Campuses.  D’Amico is currently serving as an AmeriCorps Public Ally in the Office of Civic and Community Engagement and the Butler Center for Service and Leadership at the University of Miami.

This award is granted to one VISTA member in the state of Florida who effectively engages students, builds the capacity of the campus, and addresses the needs of low-income individuals and communities. At Miami Dade College, D’Amico coordinated all service-learning and community engagement activities for the Hialeah and West campuses, including large-scale service projects, faculty workshops, and an on-campus mentoring program. Mara was able to significantly increase faculty and student participation in academic service-learning during her term with Miami Dade College.
