March 10, 2011 — Miami Hurricane —
The March 2011 edition of the Miami Hurricane highlights the creation of the Office of Civic & Community Engagement and the growing pursuit of public service among college students and recent graduates. The article showcases the steps the Office of Civic & Community Engagement is taking to serve as a liaison between classroom-based knowledge and community-related problems.
“The idea is basically to link the university more directly with local community partners and level the resources of the university to address community needs,” said Dr. Robin Bachin, Director of the Office of Civic & Community Engagement. “We’re looking at creating opportunities for students in existing courses where they can have an experiential learning component.”
As a record number of students across the country are pursuing volunteer positions such as Teach for America, AmeriCorps, and Peace Corps after college, the Office of Civic & Community Engagement is helping to create culture of civic engagement as part of the student experience at the University of Miami.
