Dr. Erin Kobetz Receives Spirit of Service-Learning Award

The Office of Civic and Community Engagement is pleased to announce that Task Force member Dr. Erin Kobetz, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Miller School of Medicine, won the Spirit of Service-Learning Award in Higher Education from the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of South Florida.

CB Connects U Launches
With CCE Overseeing Internship
CB Connects U, a new initiative from the Citizens Board designed to inform business leaders of the impact that the University of Miami has in the South Florida community, was launched at a special reception on March 27, 2012 in downtown Miami. As part of the initiative, CCE is overseeing a hands-on internship: UM senior Stephanie Horna is in the process of conducting a national benchmarking study identifying best practices in county procurement processes.

Meera Nagarsheth Named a 2012 Newman Civic Fellow!
Award given through Campus Compact
The Newman Civic Fellows Award is named for Dr. Frank Newman, one of the founders of Campus Compact, who dedicated his life to creating opportunities for student civic learning & engagement. This award recognizes Meera’s public involvement and her motivation to create lasting change. It highlights her role as a leader who inspires not only other students, but also the entire campus and community. Congratulations, Meera!

UStellenbosch: Engaging South Africa
June 15 - July 21, 2012
UM is offering a 35-day course in South Africa, team-taught by UM and Stellenbosch faculty. Based on-campus at Stellenbosch University, one of the top universities in Africa, the course includes 11 days of travel to locations across South Africa and a service learning experience in an impoverished community outside Cape Town. Mara D’Amico Receives Recognition
On October 20, 2011 Mara D’Amico was awarded the 2011 AmeriCorps VISTA Recognition through Florida Campus Compact. Mara served as an AmeriCorps*VISTA from 2010 through 2011with the Center for Community Involvement at Miami Dade College. She is currently serving as an AmeriCorps Public Ally in the Office of Civic and Community Engagement and the Butler Center for Service and Leadership at the University of Miami.

Judaic Studies Students Give Back
Holocaust Survivor Internship
The University of Miami is the site of a national project initiated by the International Commission. This Internship Project is designed to assist Holocaust Survivors while at the same time providing students with a deep educational experience that will reinforce their community values and commitment. It has been an outstanding success and changed the lives of those, students and survivors, who have been involved in it. The program is open to students of all denominations.

Guatemala: Its Land, Culture, & Religion
Academic Service-Learning abroad

Students of LAS 302/503 spend a week studying the role of culture, class, social location, and historical context in Christianity and Mayan religion in three different Guatemala cities. They also have the opportunity to research and work in coffee collectives, a school, a women’s center, construction sites, and ecological reforestation projects.

In a 2010 report on Civic Health, the Miami metropolitan area ranked at or near the bottom on almost all indicators of civic involvement. Factors included volunteering, charitable giving, voting, and non-electoral participation, among others. What can we do about it?

Management 100: FIRST Steps as a Business Student
1st year students engage with nonprofits
Management 100 students are placed in teams, mentored by upper-class students, and work in the community on projects designed to bring life the concepts they learn in the classroom. On Business United Day, they spent an entire day planting trees and shrubs, painting classrooms, and restoring a mural.
