The University of Miami offers financial security benefits to help you protect you and your family in the case of accident, illness or disability. The group life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance as well as the long term disability and one month’s pay death benefit plans are paid in full by the University.  You may choose to purchase additional protection through excess life insurance, the voluntary AD&D plan, short-term disability and long-term care plans.

Remember to designate beneficiaries for your financial security benefits on myUM. For details on how to designate your beneficiaries online, please click here.

Faculty and Staff participate in the life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance (AD&D) upon hire. In addition, faculty and staff may purchase excess life and voluntary AD&D insurance at the University’s group rate at any time, though it is beneficial to apply for these plans within 90 days of your hire date for guaranteed coverage. The guaranteed coverage amounts are:

Voluntary AD&D - any amount not exceeding ten times (10x) your base annual salary
Excess Life Insurance - the lesser of three times (3x) your base annual salary or $250,000

The University also offers long term disability, short term disability and long-term care.
