To describe the basic data services available at the University of Miami.
The Department of Telecommunications provides all Internet, Internet2 and Wide Area connectivity to the University community. Additionally, Telecommunications provides all on-campus data communications services on the Coral Gables campus and for the following business units on the Medical and RSMAS campuses: Purchasing, Accounts Payable, Human Resources, and Controllers. Data communications for all other users within Medical and RSMAS campuses are provided by their respective campuses.
Because most university departments have specialized data communications needs, Telecommunications will work with each department to determine what systems and configurations will best serve the department’s needs.
Basic data service consists of a data circuit between a user-supplied workstation (micro-computer or terminal) and a communications controller or other network connection.
Individuals ordering data service should submit an Interdepartmental Requisition (IDR) to the Telecommunications Department. At the Medical School and RSMAS campuses requests are submitted to the Dean’s representatives.
The following information must be included on the IDR:
1. Name and location of the person(s) to contact (campus address, building, floor and room number);
2. Department name, and location (if different from the contact person’s location);
3. Services required, and;
4. University account(s) to be charged for installation and recurring monthly costs.
Upon receipt of the IDR, the Telecommunications Department will assign a Telecommunications Service Request (TSR) and a memorandum will be sent to verify receipt of the IDR and provide the TSR number.
INSTALLERS CANNOT MAKE CHANGES TO THE TSR WITHOUT THE SPECIFIC APPROVAL OF THE ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND COMPUTER OPERATIONS OR HIS/HER DESIGNEE..
