Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Forecasters expect an above-average storm season, estimating approximately 12 to 16 named storms this season, six to nine of which may become hurricanes. It also is predicted that two to five of the storms may develop into major hurricanes (with sustained winds of 110 miles per hour). This is a good time to review your hurricane plan for your home and your workplace as well as the University’s Disaster Plan.
While our region is familiar with hurricanes, the season also affects much of the eastern seaboard.
The South Florida community and the University of Miami are highly experienced in hurricane preparedness and response.
If a storm threatens South Florida, the University’s Crisis Decision Team (CDT) determines whether to activate the University’s Emergency Operations Center and the Hurricane Hotlines.
