Graduate School Awards Celebration 2013-2014
The University of Miami Graduate School is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the inaugural Graduate School Awards Celebration. This program will showcase the important contributions and achievements made by our graduate students and faculty in support of graduate education, and the teaching mission of our institution. We ask for your participation by nominating a student or faculty member from your program or department and appreciate your assistance in making your colleagues aware of these awards.
Please note: Award winners will be expected to attend the Graduate School Awards Celebration on Friday, April 11, 2014, from 5:30 to 7:30pm when the awards will be presented.
Nomination Deadline: March 31, 2014 - Nominations by current faculty members, administrators, or students are welcome for the student awards.
Description & Eligibility for Student Awards
Outstanding Graduate Research Assistant: Eligibility: Currently enrolled master’s or doctoral students with a research assistantship and research responsibilities within the last 2 years at the University of Miami. Description: The Outstanding Graduate Research Assistant Award recognizes a graduate student who has distinguished themselves in scholarly or research pursuits in a graduate program at UM. The award winner would have made a distinctive and discernible contribution to his/her field during their tenure or in the 2013-14 academic year.
Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant: Eligibility: Currently enrolled master’s or doctoral students who have had a teaching assistantship and taught within the last 2 years at the University of Miami. Description: The Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award recognizes a graduate student for enhancing undergraduate education at UM. The award winner would have demonstrated superior effectiveness or innovation in teaching undergraduates while serving as an instructor or teaching assistant in a classroom, laboratory, studio or other setting, as well as demonstrated interest in professional development as a teacher.
Graduate Student Exemplar: Eligibility: Master’s or doctoral students graduating during the 2013-14 academic year. Description: The Graduate Student Exemplar award recognizes a graduating student who excelled academically, and has either overcome tremendous odds to be successful, or has consistently made contributions that benefits others. This student’s service, leadership or other distinctive efforts may have been to the campus, local, national or international community.
Selection Procedure The Graduate School leadership will convene an ad hoc selection committee to review and select award winners. The committee will be tasked with selecting awardees whose nomination materials clearly demonstrate the exemplary contributions in each category

Description & Eligibility for Faculty Awards
Outstanding Graduate Program Director:
Eligibility: All Graduate Program Directors for the 2012-13 or 2013-14 academic years are eligible for the Outstanding Graduate Program Director award.
Description: The Outstanding Graduate Program Director (GPD) Award recognizes a GPD who has made a significant impact on graduate education, and/or in support of graduate students in his/her program during the 2013-14 academic year. The Outstanding GPD may have made innovations and/or contributions to enhance curriculum, programming, recruitment, retention or placement.
Faculty Mentor of the Year: Eligibility: All faculty are eligible to be nominated for the Faculty Mentor of the Year Award. Description: The Faculty Mentor of the Year recognizes a Faculty member who has shown tremendous commitment to mentoring, advising and supporting graduate student advisees during the 2013-14 academic year. A faculty member who has made distinctive efforts in mentoring and advising graduate students to 1) become professionals in their field, 2) shape the graduate work of a graduate student, or 3) provide exceptional personal support and development to a graduate student.
