The Versatile PhD (VPhD) Features

 

The Versatile PhD (VPhD) offers information on non-academic careers for Ph.D.s and ABDs. You can use this web-based resource anytime, and confidentially. UM graduate student get access to the Premium Content Area where you'll find:

  • Examples of successful resumes and cover letters that resulted in humanities and social science Ph.D.s and ABDs getting their first post-academic positions.
  • First-person narratives written by successful humanities and social science Ph.D.s and ABDs who have gone on to non-academic careers.
  • With access to premium content, UM users can view past topics which include freelance writing and editing, higher education consulting, management consulting, federal government, and university administration.

The Versatile PhD is an excellent resource for all graduate students, particularly those in the humanities and social science. Content for science, technology, engineering and math students also exists and is being further developed.

 

Registration Instructions

 

To join the supportive community, visit VPhD. First-time users should follow the three steps below. Subsequent visits will only require log in through the Cane Authentication System (CAS) portal.

  1. Follow the VPhD link and log in on the CAS page.
  2. Use your existing CaneID and password to log in.
  3. On the screen that appears, you will see a second login request. Select the 'Register Here' button. Establish a unique, non-UM password to register and log in to VPhD. Do not use your CaneID credentials.
 
For Alumni
UM alumni may access the VPhD resource using their active CaneID username and password. If you are an alumni and your CaneID has been disabled, please select "Is your CaneID disabled" on the myum.miami.edu page to reactivate your account. Please contact University IT at (305) 284-6565 if you experience any difficulties.
