Students in the Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance degree program have a passion and an evident talent for singing.  Some were soloists in their high school choirs and leads in the musicals, while others attended summer camps and specialized schools and competed in vocal competitions.  They come to the Frost School of Music to be with others from across the country who have similar interests and to develop a free vocal technique through study with members of our renowned faculty.

Private voice lessons, vocal coaching, diction, and language study are vital components of the degree program. Vocal performance majors also study music theory, music history and literature, opera literature, solo repertoire, and vocal pedagogy, and they present solo recitals in their junior and senior years.  In addition to their musical studies, students choose from a broad selection of classes in the liberal arts to expand their world view and to prepare them to be contributors to society at large.

Vocal performance majors have numerous opportunities to expand their knowledge of choral literature and styles in one of our outstanding choral ensembles.  Undergraduate students are frequently cast in principal and supporting roles in Frost Opera Theater productions when appropriate for the student’s vocal and artistic development.

Many voice students work professionally as members of Seraphic Fire, the Florida Grand Opera chorus, and as singers with various performing organizations throughout South Florida.  Master classes with some of the world’s foremost artists are regularly scheduled.  Renée Fleming, Helen Donath, Marilyn Horne, Florence Quivar, and Measha Brueggergosman are among those who have shared their insights and experiences with our students.

Our goal is to prepare you for the next step in your career as a professional singer.  Our graduates are singing all over the world—-in opera, oratoria, professional choral organizations, musical theater and recital stages.  We look forward to welcoming you as a student to the Department of Vocal Performance at the University of Miami Frost School of Music!
