Welcome to Miami!
Once you are enrolled as a student at the Frost School of Music, I will be delighted to have you as a member of my teaching studio. It is my goal to guide you and inspire you to your fullest potential as a musician and as a violinist.
As you probably realize, the Violin is an enormously versatile instrument, with a huge and rich tradition and repertoire that reaches back several centuries. Every major composer in classical music has focused their greatest efforts to writing for our instrument! And, now, here is your chance to become a part of that world, as you move toward mastery of the violin.
As you embark on your college career here in Miami, make it your top priority to fully immerse yourself in every possible musical experience that Miami can offer you…there are few places on earth where you will find such a rich and fertile ground for your musical growth. There is no time to waste, let’s get started!
In addition to your weekly violin lessons, there will be a weekly violin studio class where we perform for one another and discuss pertinent subjects focused on technique, musicianship, and performance. Each performance major will appear in the weekly String Forum at least once per semester. Other performance opportunities invariably materialize, throughout the semester, so you should always be ready with something to play!
Just to get you excited, you should know that many of my present and former students have recorded and performed with some of the best known musicians in the world, including Andre Bocelli, Pavarotti, Gloria Estafan, Julio Iglesius, and even Michael Jackson and Busta Rhymes! Not long ago many of us were performing live on a world wide broadcast for the MTV Video Awards. And now, with the exciting addition of the renowned Henry Mancini Institute here on our campus, amazing opportunities have arisen for many of our students in recent years, including performances broadcast on National Public Television and HBO. Name another music school that can offer so much!
In addition, violin students can take advantage of the huge number of fantastic events here at Frost:
- our artist-in-residence, world renowned violinist and composer Mark O’Connor
- master classes featuring world famous violinists such as Midori, Shlomo Mintz, Dmitri Sitkovetsky, and Joseph Silverstein
- performances by world-class soloists, the Bergonzi String Quartet, and faculty
- residencies with renowned musicians from The Cleveland Orchestra
I look forward to getting better acquainted with each of you soon. In the meantime, keep practicing, and keep in touch!
