Dear Prospective Viola Student,
Welcome! 환영합니다 (hwangyong-hamnida) Bienvenido!
歓迎 (Kangei!) Bine ai venit! 欢迎 (Huānyíng!)
These are languages spoken by the students who were in the Viola Studio this year. Of course, we all speak English, but the diversity of cultures was an enriching experience for all of us. The University of Miami is renowned for this characteristic.
The Frost School of Music illustrates the epitome of diversity. When you are here you will study all the traditional performance techniques and literature, and also play music that is newer than yesterday! You will hear and play styles from the Classical to Salsa. I invite you to visit our YouTube site (univmiamistrings) to hear a sampling of some of our recent students in performance.
Your Viola Studio experience will include weekly lessons and Viola class, where we all share in the adventure of learning to play this beautiful instrument.
Your Frost experience will include playing in the fantastic Frost Symphony Orchestra, being in a Chamber Music group, and taking courses led by professors of Music Theory/composition and Music History who are leaders in their fields.
In the Viola Studio you will work closely with students from the United States, Korea, Latin America, Japan, Romania, China and other fascinating places.
Frost School of Music viola students participate in master classes given by members of The Cleveland Orchestra, and also Roberto Diaz, Mark Jacob, Midori, Shlomo Mintz, Dmitri Sitkovetsky, and Joseph Silverstein. We also have a special residency with artist-in-residence Mark O’Connor.
We also produce a special Viola Day each year where violists from all over Florida come together to make music, share ideas and have a good time. There are classes on important techniques, guest artists, mini lessons, ensemble rehearsals, an instrument showcase, and a concert at the end of the day featuring soloists, and the Grand Viola Ensemble!
I look forward to meeting you,
Professor of Music
