October 27, 2015 — Coral Gables, FLA — Raquel Sofίa, an alumna of the University of Miami Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music, has been nominated for the 16th Annual Latin Grammy Awards in the “Best New Artist” category.

Sofίa, B.M. ’09, who hails from Puerto Rico, is “the breath of fresh air that Latin Pop needs,” says international megastar Juanes, who first hired the talented vocalist for his multiple Grammy-winning “Juanes MTV Unplugged” tour. She has since recorded vocals for the Grammy-winning track “Ula Ula” by Illya Kuryaki & The Valderramas, featured in Target’s “Summer Up” campaign, and she wrote and performed on HBO’s 2015 Game of Thrones mixtape. Sofίa has also performed with Shakira and is currently signed to Sony Music Latin.

Known as a Spotify “2015 Artist to Watch,” Raquel Sofia has grossed over 3.6 million streams on Spotify in just six months, and over nine million streams to date. Winner of the Rudy Perez Songwriting Award, her first single “Agridulce” was named one of Beats Music’s “Best of 2014 Pop” songs.

The Latin Grammy Awards is awarded by The Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences to recognize outstanding achievement in the Latin music industry. The Latin Academy is a multinational membership-based association composed of music industry professionals, songwriters, musicians, producers, and other creative and technical recording specialists. The organization is dedicated to improving the quality of life and culture for Latin artists and music. The 16th Annual Latin Grammy Awards will air live on the Univision Network on November 19, from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Sofίa made her Festival Miami debut at UM’s Maurice Gusman Concert Hall on October 17, where she performed an incredible, high-energy concert that showcased her jazz-infused vocals and sonic style in a performance that included selections from her debut album, Te Quiero Los Domingos.
