Frost School Jazz Students and Ensembles Earn 17 DownBeat 37th Annual Student Music Awards

April 30, 2014 — Coral Gables, FL — Frost School of Music students were once again well represented in DownBeat magazine’s 37th Annual Student Music Awards, with 17 awards bestowed on ensembles, soloists, arrangers, composers and engineers.

Group awards went to the Frost School’s Small Vocal Jazz Group Extensions for Undergraduate Outstanding Performance Ensemble, directed by Kate Reid, the Manny Echazabal Group in the Small Jazz Combo category, and for the Funk Ensemble directed by Steve Rucker, in the Blues Pop Rock Group category. Frost Concert Jazz Band, directed by John Daversa, was also awarded a Graduate College Outstanding Performances award in the Large Jazz Ensembles category.

Undergraduate College solo winners included jazz pianist Nick Hetko in the Blues Pop Rock Soloist category, while Gene Knific was named winner in the Original Composition – Large Ensemble category for his composition, “A Change Of Heart.”

Solo awards for Outstanding Performances were awarded to Undergraduates Nick Hetko on piano in the Jazz Soloist category, and Carolyn Furniss, vocalist, in the Blues Pop Rock Soloist category; and Graduate Student Kelly Garner, vocalist for Blues Pop Rock Soloist.

A Graduate College win for Jazz Arrangement was earned by William Longo for “You Don’t Know What Love Is.” Other composition and arrangement awards for Outstanding Performances went to Undergraduate Carolyn Furniss in the Original Composition – Small Ensemble category for her work “Where To Go” and to Graduate student Rafael Piccolotto de Lima, in the Original Composition – Large Ensemble category for his work “Brookmeyer Motives.” Graduate College Outstanding Performance awards for Jazz Arrangement also went to Kelly Garner, “East of the Sun” and Jeremy Fox, “All My Tomorrows” (Gary Lindsay, faculty mentor for both).

Lastly, Rafael Piccolotto de Lima earned a win in the Graduate College Engineered Studio Recording category. Graduate College Outstanding performance Awards for Engineered Studio Recordings also went to two Frost students, Jeremy Fox and William Longo.
