Festival Miami Presents Two More Additions: Joan Osborne and Ana Popovic

July 22, 2013 — Coral Gables, FL — Celebrating its 30th Anniversary Season this October, the University of Miami Frost School of Music’s highly-anticipated Festival Miami proudly announces the addition of multi-Platinum singer-songwriter Joan Osborne and chart-topping blues sensation Ana Popovic to its stellar lineup of artists performing on the month-long Festival in October 2013. Both concerts are featured as part of the Festival’s Creative American Music series, and will take place at UM’s Maurice Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Drive on the Coral Gables campus. Festival Miami kicks off with a spectacular Opening Night concert on October 1, with international superstar Gloria Estefan performing a jazz-influenced program of American classics from her upcoming album, The Standards.

Joan Osborne will enthrall audiences with her sultry, muscular voice as she performs an unforgettable acoustic duo concert on October 10 at 8:00 PM, with pianist Kevin Cotton, featuring her Grammy-nominated breakthrough hit single “One of Us,” which sold over 3 million copies on first release, and was featured in the TV show Glee. Osborne will also perform newer originals and covers from her 2012 Grammy-nominated CD, Bring It On Home, a raw, woolly collection of vintage blues, R&B and soul songs that make up the seventh album from this spirited artist.

Multi-nominated Blues Music Award artist Ana Popovic, whose fiery, passionate playing and singing have earned her the moniker “the female Jimi Hendrix,” will perform a crowd-pleasing show on October 19 at 8:00 PM. Considered one of the best blues players on the scene today, the Memphis-based Serbian guitarist/singer-songwriter is an international touring artist who has shared the stage with such American blues icons as B. B. King, Buddy Guy, and Robert Cray. Her most recent release, Can You Stand the Heat, was featured in USA Today as a “Pick of the Week.” In addition, Popovic was a featured special guest artist on NPR Music and has appeared on the cover of Vintage Guitar magazine and American Blues Scene, among others.car

Concerts previously announced under the Creative American Music banner include Festival Miami’s annual free Songwriters Showcase -- one of the most anticipated popular events at Festival Miami each year -- on October 9 featuring songs composed and performed by Frost School of Music students enrolled in the Bruce Hornsby Creative American Music program. Following on October 13, Festival Miami presents Fiddles on Fire, featuring the return of multi-Grammy Award-winning crossover violinist Mark O’connor, a Festival Miami favorite who brilliantly melds folk, country and classical traditions into distinctive forms. He will be joined by Glenn Basham for an extraordinary display of violin virtuosity of epic dimension with fingers flying, toes tapping, and a blaze of excitement as they create an improvisatory mash-up of roaring bluegrass, jazz and country fiddle. Student fiddlers and national champion finalists from the Frost School of Music also showcase their prodigious talents.

Festival Miami collaborates with Sunday Afternoons of Music for Children to present a Halloween concert on Sunday, October 27 with The Okee Dokee Brothers, 2013 Grammy Award winners in the “Best Children’s Album” category and two-time Parent’s Choice Award recipients. They have garnered praise from the likes of NPR's All Things Considered and USA Today. All children are invited to dress in Halloween costumes and enjoy an after-concert A-B-C party: Apple juice, Balloons and Cookies.
