Dean Shelton Berg honored by Miami for Jazz Appreciation Month

May 01, 2009 — Shelton “Shelly” Berg, dean of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, was one of a select few community members who were honored recently by Miami Mayor Manny Diaz with a proclamation in celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month (April). Dean Berg is an internationally recognized pianist, composer, arranger, and educator who is widely acclaimed for his energetic and innovative approaches to jazz performance, composition, and pedagogy. His groundbreaking book, Jazz Improvisation: The Goal-Note Method, is considered one of the seminal texts on the subject, and his Chop-Monster improvisation series provides an innovative approach to teaching improvisation at a beginning level.
