The Incredible Generosity of Dr. Phillip and Patricia Frost

When the University of Miami kicked off their Momentum Campaign on October 16, 2003, the evening featured Dr. and Mrs. Phillip Frost, whose $33 million gift to the School of Music was announced before an enthusiastic crowd at the UM Convocation Center. In honor of their bequest, the largest ever given to a university-based music school in the U.S. at the time, the School of Music was officially renamed the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music.

The Frosts’ donation will be used to fund program endowments, faculty chairs, student scholarships and facility improvements. Dr. Frost, former chairman of the University of Miami’s Board of Trustees, says his and his wife’s support of the arts and of the University is an important, long-standing commitment for both of them.

To mark the momentous occasion, the newly-named Frost School of Music celebrated on October 30, 2003 at UM Maurice Gusman Concert Hall with a formal program and naming announcement with Dr. and Mrs. Frost, UM Trustees, President Shalala, Provost Glazer, Dean Hipp, music faculty and students.

The Frosts are well-known throughout the community for their generous philanthropic commitments. Dr. Frost was the founder, chairman and CEO of IVAX Corporation, a Miami-based multinational pharmaceuticals company and is currently Chairman of the Board of TEVA Pharmacuticals. Mrs. Frost is a retired educator who was the principal of the prestigious West Laboratory Elementary School, which is adjacent to the University of Miami campus. She currently serves as the chair of the Smithsonian National Board and is a member of the Florida International University Board of Trustees.

“The arts play a vital role in the life of a community, and music in particular is a unifying force that transcends age, race, and culture. Miami is our home and Patricia and I wanted to create a legacy that would enhance and sustain the School’s important work.”—Dr. Phillip Frost

Today, Phillip and Patricia Frost enthusiastically support Dean Shelton G. Berg and the music faculty as they implement the Frost School’s new strategic plan for the future.  The Frosts’ incredible generosity has inspired many others to support the University of Miami and other institutions of higher education throughout the world.

“The University of Miami has shown the South Florida community its commitment and leadership in the arts by positioning the School of Music as a premier institution where so many young people have studied and performed music.  It is truly our joy to be able to repay a small part of our great indebtedness to this community.”
