What would you say are the outstanding highlights of your professional life?

  1. Playing my first gig in 1957

  5. Receiving the Phillip Frost Award for Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship

What advice would you give an aspiring young musician?

  * Develop good financial habits. Shop around for everything from books and clothing to coffee and gasoline. Take care of your stuff. Consider the difference between want and need. Learn how money works and how to make it work for you. Learn how to give back.

  * Get in and stay in top physical shape. Visit the Wellness Center regularly—work out, run, etc. Take spinning or yoga classes.

  * Abstain from alcoholic beverage consumption, smoking and drug use.

  * Watch what you eat and drink. Don’t gain a lot of weight or develop an eating disorder.

  * Manage your personal relationships responsibly. Protect yourself from physical, financial and emotional harm.

  * Manage your time. Get enough sleep but don’t sleep too much. Get on a schedule that works. Understand what is meant by “time is money.”

  * Practice!

  * Make use of as many academic resources as possible—libraries, writing center the internet etc. If you have a laptop get a wireless account. Use and try to understand developing technology.

  * Become culturally aware. Be a regular at Frost School of Music concerts, the Lowe Art Museum, the Arsht Center, UM and professional athletic events.

  * Become spiritually aware. Be a regular at a church, synagogue, mosque or temple—practice meditation or yoga—run, Practice! Spiritual growth and musical/academic achievement go hand in hand.

  * Go to class, take your studies seriously and…Practice!

Short Biography:

Whit Sidener is professor emeritus and former chair of the Department of Studio Music and Jazz at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. He retired in May 2013. Professor Sidener is a recipient of the IAJE Award for Outstanding Service to Jazz Education, and the Phillip Frost Award for Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship. When under his direction, the Frost Concert Jazz Band recorded and toured extensively, appeared at ten IAJE Conferences and won 15 Downbeat Student Recording Awards. Sidener has recorded with such artists as Harry Chapin, Jose Feliciano, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Frankie Valli, Gloria Estefan and Luciano Pavarotti, to name a few. He has performed live with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Judy Garland, Paul Anka, Johnny Mathis, Lou Rawls, Marlene Dietrich, Mel Torme, Rosemary Clooney, Sarah Vaughn, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Perry Como and Sammy Davis Jr. and Ray Charles.
