June 11, 2013 — Coral Gables — Former University of Miami Frost School of Music Band of the Hour director William B. Russell, B.M. ’57, M.M. ’58, died December 3, 2012 in Lake Placid, Florida. He was 77. Russell was appointed director of the Band of the Hour in 1972 and held the position until 1991.
Russell also played a key role in developing the Studio Music and Jazz department at the Frost School of Music in the early 1960s. In 1984 he was presented with the University of Miami Alumni Association Inside Out Award. The Inside Out Award is presented to “a member of the University of Miami administration, faculty, or staff who is working on the inside, helping to bring those on the outside who used to be inside but are now outside, back inside.” While at UM, Russell was also inducted into the Iron Arrow honor society and was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Society.
He is survived by his sister, Barbara Darrow, E.D. ’67.
About Band of the Hour
The Frost Band of the Hour is the marching band of the University of Miami. Now under the direction of Associate Director of Bands Thomas Keck, it performs annually for over one million Hurricane fans. In addition to appearances at home football games in Sun Life Stadium, the Frost Band of the Hour has performed at the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange, Cotton, Peach, Liberty, Bluebonnet, Gator, Gotham, Carquest, Micron PC, MPC Computers, Emerald, and Champs Sports Bowls.
The band is comprised of energetic and passionate brass, woodwind, and percussion, as well as the Hurricanette color guard and dancers. They perform at home football games, travel to one away game each season, support the football team at invited bowl games, as well as perform at on-campus events and regional exhibitions.
The Frost Band of the Hour is the largest and most spirited student organization on the UM campus and draws its membership from the entire student body. Band members represent nearly every academic major and come from every state in the country.
