TEDxMIA Selects Dean Shelly Berg and Percussion Faculty Svet Stoyanov as Conference Speakers

December 05, 2012 — Coral Gables, FL — Shelly Berg, Dean of the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, and Svet Stoyanov, Associate Professor of Instrumental Performance and Program Director of Percussion at the Frost School, were selected as featured speakers at TEDxMIA, a Technology, Entertainment and Design conference held October 23 at the New World Center in Miami Beach.

Themed “Framing the Future,” the exciting event showcased Miami-based speakers who are taking their perception of what is possible in our world and helping create those positive ideas a reality.

Started in California 25 years ago, TED has expanded globally, with independently organized TEDx events taking place on nearly every continent. TEDxMIA is a grassroots movement devoted to spreading and supporting the diversity of ideas, innovation, and art.

TEDxMIA’s multisensory, multimedia experience included speakers, creative performances, and TED videos relating to the theme “Framing the Future.”

Shelly Berg's talk "Burt Bacharach is the Secret to Life" focused on how performing music intently is a metaphor for living a fulfilling life. A pianist in both classical and jazz styles, Berg has been the dean of the UM Frost School of Music since 2007. He pioneered the development of the Frost Experiential Music Curriculum and oversees the academic, musical and research pursuits of over 700 music students and 100 faculty.

Svet Stoyanov performed a percussion work at TEDxMIA entitled "Musique de Table" on an amplified tabletop, along with two stellar percussionists from the Frost School of Music Elizabeth Galvan and Maria Chlebus. The work showcased how contemporary music enhances and reflects the world in which we live. Stoyanov is collaboratively building one of the most unique and innovative modern percussion programs at Frost, combining solo, chamber and orchestral percussion performance into a single intensive curriculum.
