April 10, 2014 — Coral Gables, FL — ’Cane Record’s Breaking the Surface, Vol. 3 compilation is one of five nominees for The 13th Independent Music Awards (The IMAs) in the Compilation category, the second year in a row the student-run organization has been nominated.
Music Resource Group (MRG), publisher of an online industry networking database, The Musician’s Atlas, produces the IMAs. MRG announced nominees in March in more than 80 categories including Album, Song, EP, Music Producer, Music Video and Design, culled from thousands of submissions worldwide. Winners will be determined in July 2014 by fan vote and a panel of influential artist and industry judges including Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson, Laurie Anderson, Suzanne Vega, Meshell Ndegeocello, Chiddy Bang, Shelby Lynne, Joshua Redman, G. Love, Aoife O’Donovan, Band Of Skulls, Raul Midon, Bernie Worrell, Dennis Diken, Arturo Sandoval, Alan Light (Live From The Artists Den), Terry McBride (Nettwerk Music Group), Kevin Lyman (Vans Warped Tour), Anthony DeCurtis (Rolling Stone), Hillary McAndrew Plate (Lincoln Center) Bob Ludwig (Gateway Mastering), Bruce Iglauer (Alligator Records), Evan Schlansky (American Songwriter), Delphine Robertson (Playtone Productions), Benji Rogers (PledgeMusic), Megan West (SoundCloud) and others.
’Cane Records was created in the fall of 1993 by a small group of ambitious students in the Music Business and Entertainment Industries program at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. The organization was founded to give Frost School students hands-on experience in all facets of running an independent record label. ’Cane Records has released 25 albums in the 20 years since its inception, and their prior release, Breaking the Surface, Vol. 2, was also nominated by the Independent Music Awards in the Compilation category. The label has released music of all genres, including rock, R&B, classical, Latin, funk, holiday, and more. One of the first of its kind, ’Cane Records continues to be one of the leading student-run record labels in the country.

In addition to industry-determined Winners, music fans from around the world have until Friday, July 18, 2014 to cast their votes online via The IMA Vox Pop Jukebox to help determine the fan-selected IMA Winners.
