Gusman Concert Hall
Thomas Sleeper, conductor
Luciano Magnanini, bassoon
The joyous and passionate music of composers Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and Dmitri Shostakovich are paired in a challenging concert showcasing the artistic depth of the Frost Symphony Orchestra. The concert opens with Jubilation by Zwilich, a 1983 Pulitzer Prize winner and 2012 Stamps Distinguished Visitor, and the Zwilich Bassoon Concerto featuring faculty artist Luciano Magnanini as bassoon soloist. Then, the Shostakovitch Symphony No. 5, described after its premiere as “…deep, meaningful, gripping music, classical in the integrity of its conception, perfect in form and the mastery of orchestral writing—music striking for its novelty and originality, but at the same time somehow hauntingly familiar, so truly and sincerely does it recount human feelings” (Neuhaus).
