John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera took London by storm in 1728, and it remains one of the most frequently performed operatic works in the English language. The Beggar’s Opera is regarded as the first and most successful example of the ballad opera—a once-thriving genre of satirical musical play—and its influence on subsequent British works for the stage cannot be underestimated. Frost Opera Theater performs Benjamin Britten’s brilliant arrangement of this theatrical landmark.
