In the immensely popular comic opera Albert Herring, Benjamin Britten’s gifts for parody and caricature are on full display in a score that sparkles with some of the composer’s wittiest music. Like Peter Grimes and other works by Britten, Albert Herring investigates society’s reaction to an unusual individual; in this case, however, it is from a primarily amusing and cheerful outlook.
