Admissions, Pre-screening/Audition Procedures for Contemporary Performance Principals
The Contemporary Performance Principal is restricted to songwriters who are also applying to the Creative American Music Program.

PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU ARE NOT A SONGWRITER. (Both music AND lyrics, not instrumental music only*.)
*except for Contemporary Media Performance applicants

Qualified applicants must also apply to one of the following majors:
• Music Business and Entertainment Industries (MBEC)
• Composition: Commercial Music & Production (MWP)
• Music Education (MED)
• Music Engineering Technology (MUE)
• Music Therapy (MTY)
• Bachelor of Arts in Music (MUS)

All of the above programs will also include a Minor in Creative American Music.

Phase I: Creative American Music/Contemporary Performance Pre-screening Submission Deadline - December 1.

Online Pre-screening Submission:
Pre-screenings will be accepted online through DecisionDesk. Please go to this website, register, and submit your pre-screening materials to University of Miami Frost School of Music by December 1st. All submissions should include both audio and video.

Please submit your audition materials online through our DecisionDesk drop box. DecisionDesk accepts the following file formats:

Video (MPEG, MPG, MP4, OGG, MOV, AVI, WMV, M4V, VOB)
Audio (MP3, M4A, OGG, AIFF, WMA, WAV, AAC)
Image (JPEG, JPG, PNG, GIF)

Individual files can be as large as 5GB, but keep in mind that larger files may take some time to upload. Upload speed is dependent upon both file size and speed of the internet connection. Apply to both the University of Miami and the Frost School of Music

Prepare the following for submission:
• A video recording of live, un-edited performances of three original songs that can be uploaded online through DecisionDesk.
• Complete lyric sheets for all three songs that will be uploaded through DecisionDesk.

Phase II: On-Campus audition by invitation
By invitation only, on-campus appointment on one of our scheduled audition days.

All applicants invited to audition live must be prepared to perform up to three original songs as well as their individual instrument requirements below.

Contemporary Drumset:
• Applicant must demonstrate a very strong aptitude in at least one stylistic area of contemporary performance, for example, pop/studio, metal, or gospel, etc.
• Soloing in various settings: trading fours, filling, and improvising over an ostinato figure
• Chart reading in various styles
• Applicant must demonstrate reasonable technical facility
• Applicant must demonstrate some proficiency in rock, funk, and fusion styles
• Applicant must show some familiarity with Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian, and world styles
• Applicant must show openness to embrace other styles with which he/she may be unfamiliar

Contemporary Keyboard:
• Applicant must show a very strong aptitude in at least one stylistic area of contemporary performance, for example, pop/studio, metal, or gospel, etc.
• Soloing in various settings: including filling, and improvising over an ostinato figure
• Chart reading in various styles
• Applicant must demonstrate reasonable technical facility
• Applicant must demonstrate some proficiency in rock, funk, and fusion styles
• Applicant must show some familiarity with Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian, and world styles
• Applicant must show openness to embrace other styles with which he/she may be unfamiliar

Contemporary Guitar:
• Applicant must show a very strong aptitude in at least one stylistic area of contemporary performance, for example, pop/studio, rock, funk, country, etc.
• Major & Minor open position and barre chords with roots on the 6th & 5th strings
• Major Scales, Major & Min Pentatonic scales
• 12 bar blues, classic rock song, pop ballad, and one traditional or ethnic style
• Chart reading in various styles
• Applicant must demonstrate reasonable technical facility on both electric and acoustic guitar
• Applicant must show some proficiency in rock, pop, funk, and acoustic guitar styles
• Applicant must show openness to embrace other styles with which he/she may be unfamiliar

Contemporary Bass:
• Applicant must show a strong aptitude in at least one stylistic area of contemporary music
• Applicant must demonstrate some ability to comprehend and play in other styles - for example, rock, pop, funk, latin, jazz, etc.
• Applicant must demonstrate ability to play with a good sound and a strong time feel – both as a soloist, and with a rhythm section
• Applicant must demonstrate some ability to read music
• Applicant must demonstrate reasonable technical facility on the instrument
• Applicant must show openness to embrace other styles with which he/she may be unfamiliar

Contemporary Voice:
• Applicant must show a strong aptitude and sense or originality in contemporary vocal performance
• Applicant will be asked to perform up to three original songs, self-accompanied on guitar, piano, or other chordal instrument
• Applicant will be asked to demonstrate some embellishment/improvisational, harmonization, and sight-reading abilities. However, these are not criteria for admission.
• Applicant will be asked to demonstrate his/her range and technical facility through typical practice routines and exercises (scales, arpeggios, pitch matching, etc.)
• Applicant must show openness to embrace other styles with which he/she may be unfamiliar

Contemporary Media Performance:
• Applicant must show a very strong aptitude in at least one stylistic area of contemporary, performance-orientated computer-based music; for example, hip-hop, electronica, house, euro, trance, etc.
• Applicant must show strong aptitude in one or more performance-oriented music software such as Abelton Live, in addition to traditional DAW software such as Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic, etc. Applicant must own a legal copy of the software
• Applicant must demonstrate reasonable technical facility on a conventional or alternate midi/media controller. Applicant must own their own instrument/controllers.
• Applicant must be able to improvise in real-time in a variety of settings, with both live musicians and pre-recorded music
• Applicant must show strong familiarity with a variety of styles of recorded music, including Funk, Rock, Pop, Caribbean, Brazilian, and various World Music styles
• Applicant must show openness to embrace other styles with which he/she may be unfamiliar
• Additionally, the applicant must also perform to Frost School of Music admissions standards on a conventional classical, jazz, or contemporary instrument or voice
