Graduate Woodwind Applicants

The University of Miami Frost School of Music has an outstanding woodwind program and world-class faculty on every instrument. We look forward to meeting you at your audition.

Accompaniment is not required for recorded or live auditions. All woodwind auditions must be scheduled with the Program Director for your instrument.

Flute:


All graduate candidates in flute performance will be required to submit a pre-screening audition via DecisionDesk by December 1. The pre-screening should include the following:

    •  Two contrasting movements of a twentieth or twenty-first century piece
    •  Two contrasting movements of a Bach Sonata
    •  Two or three orchestra excerpts from the list below.

Live Audition:

Select one from the following:
    •  Griffes Poem
    •  Ibert Concerto
    •  Nielson Concerto
    •  Khatchaturian Concerto
    •  Or a similar work

And, either one of the following:
    •  A Bach Sonata
    •  A Mozart Concerto

Solos from the following orchestra works (also to be used for the pre-screening requirements):
    •  Ravel- Daphnis and Chloe
    •  Hindemith- Symphonic Metamorphosis
    •  Mendelssohn- A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Oboe:


Applicants to the Master of Music:

    •  Mozart- Oboe Concerto in C, K.314

Either:
    •  Saint-Saens- Oboe Sonata, Opus 166 (movements 1 and 3)
    •  Schumann- Three Romances, Opus 94 (movements 1 and 2)

The following orchestral excerpts:
    •  Brahms- Violin Concerto (2nd movement, Solo)
    •  Rossini- Overture, The Silken Ladder (Fast Solo)
    •  Ravel- Le Tombeau de Couperin (3rd movement, Opening Solo)

Applicants to the Doctor of Musical Arts:

    •  Mozart- Oboe Concerto in C, K.314

Either:
    •  Britten- Six Metamorphosis After Ovid (select 3 movements)
    •  Vaughan Williams- Oboe Concerto (1st movement)

The following orchestral excerpts:
    •  Brahms- Violin Concerto (2nd movement, Solo)
    •  Rossini- Overture, The Silken Ladder (Fast Solo)
    •  Ravel- Le Tombeau de Couperin (3rd movement, Opening Solo)

Applicants to the Artist Diploma:

    •  Hindemith- Oboe Sonata (2nd movement)

    •  One complete piece of your choice from the Classical or Romantic periods
    •  One contemporary piece of your choice
    •  Three contrasting orchestral excerpts of your choice

Applicants to the Doctor of Musical Arts:

    •  Mozart Concerto
    •  One complete piece of your choice from the Classical or Romantic periods
    •  One contemporary piece of your choice
    •  Either the Copland or Nielsen Concerto
    •  Three contrasting orchestral excerpts of your choice
