Graduate Brass Applicants: Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba

The University of Miami Frost School of Music has an outstanding brass program with world-class faculty on every instrument.  We look forward to hearing your audition.

Brass audition dates:  January 25, 2014; February 8, 2014; and     February 15, 2014

Trumpet:

Trumpet auditions will be conducted using the following format:

Required Solo Selections- NO substitutions:
    •  Honegger Intrada
    •  Charlier Études Transcendantes No. 2
    •  Any Bitsch Étude
    •  Contrasting solo and/or étude of applicant’s choice

Required Orchestral Excerpts- NO substitutions:
    •  Stravinsky Petrouchka 1947 (complete)
    •  Mahler Symphony No. 5, first movement
    •  Optional: contrasting excerpts of applicant’s choice

French Horn:

French Horn auditions will be conducted using the following format:

Choose one concerto from the following list:
    •  Mozart Concerto #2 1st movement
    •  Strauss Concerto #1 or #2 1st movement
    •  Gliere Concerto 1st movement (no cadenza)
    •  Gordon Jacob Concerto 1st movement

Choose one unaccompanied solo from the following list:
    •  Amram Blues and Variations for Monk
    •  Krol Laudatio
    •  Reynolds Passacaglia
    •  Arnold Fantasy for Horn

Orchestral Excerpts:
    •  Beethoven 7 1st movement: 1st Horn
    •  Beethoven 3 Trio: 2nd Horn
    •  Beethoven 9: 4th Horn solo
    •  Ravel Pavane
    •  Tchaikovsky 5
    •  Wagner Siegfried Rhine Journey (short call)

Trombone:

Trombone auditions will be conducted using the following format:

Applicants for the Master of Music:
A live audition is preferable, but an online video submission via DecisionDesk is also acceptable. The audition should contain 20-30 minutes of selections from the following:

Tenor Trombone:
Two contrasting solo works from the standard solo repertoire, in their entirety.

Orchestra excerpts selected from the following:
    •  Berlioz Hungarian March
    •  Mozart Tuba Mirum from Requiem
    •  Ravel Bolero
    •  Rossini William Tell Overture
    •  Saint Saens Symphony No. 3
    •  Wagner Ride of the Valkyries

Bass Trombone:
Two contrasting solo works from the standard solo repertoire, in their entirety.

Orchestra excerpts selected from the following:
    •  Berlioz Hungarian March
    •  Haydn The Creation
    •  Rossini William Tell Overture
    •  Schumann Symphony No. 3
    •  Wagner Ride of the Valkyries

Applicants for the Doctor of Musical Arts:
A live audition is required. The audition should be a 20-30 minute performance of selections from each of the following:

Tenor Trombone:
Three contrasting solo works from the standard solo repertoire, one of which must be a Baroque transcription, and one of which must be a Contemporary piece.

Orchestra excerpts selected from the following:
    •  Berlioz Hungarian March
    •  Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique
    •  Brahms Symphony No. 2
    •  Hindemith Symphonic Metamorphoses
    •  Mahler Symphony No. 3
    •  Mozart Tuba Mirum from Requiem
    •  Ravel Bolero
    •  Saint Saens Symphony No. 3
    •  Schumann Symphony No. 3
    •  Wagner Prelude to Act 3 of Lohengrin
    •  Wagner Ride of the Valkyries

Bass Trombone:
Three contrasting solo works from the standard solo repertoire, one of which must be a Baroque transcription, and one of which must be a Contemporary piece.

Applicants for the Artist Diploma:
For students holding a Bachelors degree in performance: the requirements are the same as the Master of Music.

For students holding a Masters degree in performance: the requirements are the same as the Doctor of Musical Arts, but a video recording may be submitted via DecisionDesk if a live audition is not possible.

Euphonium:

Euphonium auditions will be conducted using the following format:

Applicants for the Doctor of Musical Arts:

Tuba:

Tuba auditions will be conducted using the following format:

Applicants for the Doctor of Musical Arts:
