Public Lecture: Dissemination of Hurricane Forecasting Information

Rosenstiel School and The Greater Miami Chapter of the American Meteorological Society

Hurricane The Greater Miami Chapter of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science present a lecture focusing on the dissemination of hurricane forecasting information between scientists, local and international media outlets, and the community at-large. Dr. Bill Read, the new director of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) will discuss the planning and preparations underway at the NHC for the Atlantic Hurricane Season, which began on
June 1.

The lecture will take place in the Rosenstiel School Auditorium on June 26 at 7 p.m. There will be a welcome reception immediately preceding the event at 6:30 p.m. The University of Miami Rosenstiel School is located at 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway, Virginia Key (next to the Miami Seaquarium). Support the Process of Democracy - Help Staff the Polls!

Our alumni can make a major contribution to the effective administration of the upcoming August and November elections. This election cycle brings unique challenges because more than half the voters in Florida live in counties that will use new voting systems and because a high voter turnout is expected. We write to urge you to allow some of your business/company employees to serve as poll workers during these elections. The need for skilled poll workers is critical. To run the polls smoothly, the Supervisors of Elections need workers who are comfortable giving and understanding complex directions, preferably people who are computer literate and technologically savvy. Poll workers should be able to communicate effectively with diverse members of the public. Businesses are filled with employees at many job levels who meet this description.
Miami-Dade is asking poll workers to sign up by June 30 for training in July. Other counties will also have sign-up deadlines. Please do let us know if your business/company will participate so that we can thank our alumni who participate. Email us at alumnielectionteam@law.miami.edu.
