The Campus During the Presidential Debate: What You Need to Know

Classes
All University of Miami classes will be held on Thursday, September 30.

To meet traffic control and security requirements for the presidential debate, access to some University parking garages and lots may be temporarily closed or limited. It is important to note that no daily or weekly parking passes will be allowed in any campus garage from Monday September 27 through Thursday September 30.

• Pavia Garage - from September 27 to 30, this lot will be restricted to resident-student permits only.
• Wellness Center Parking Lot - closed from September 27 to 30.
• Several Residential College Parking Lots - closed from September 27 to 30.
• Ponce de Leon Parking Garage - this lot also will be impacted by the debate.

Parking and Transportation Services has arranged for temporary parking in three locations: the three temporary "green space" lots that are accessible from Stanford Drive, the Lee Lincoln property on the corner of Ponce and Granada, and the swales on Corniche, Albenga, and Liguria Avenues. Look for directional signage that will guide you to these temporary lots.

Transportation
On Thursday, September 30, Hurry 'Cane shuttle service will not operate the Dickinson Route and will operate modified service on the Stanford Route with no reduction in the number of shuttle buses. The Fountain Route will operate normally. The Hurry 'Cane shuttle hub, which is located at the Ponce Garage, will shift to Coral Gables municipal lot 42 across from the Ponce Garage.

Metrorail service will be suspended at the University Station on Ponce de Leon Boulevard on Thursday, September 30. Miami-Dade County Transit will provide shuttle service from the South Miami and Douglas Road Metrorail stations to the Coral Gables campus on that day with connections to the Hurry 'Cane shuttle system.

Ultimately, law enforcement and security personnel will make the final decisions regarding parking and traffic control in the days leading up to, and immediately before the debate itself. For more information on possible parking lot closures, visit the Transportation Issues page.

Street Closures
Some streets will be temporarily closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Expect street closures during the week of the debate. For the latest information on street closures and traffic rerouting, read the special daily editions of e-Veritas and this Web site.

ID Badges
All University of Miami faculty members, staff, and students will be required to wear their UM identification ('Cane Card) at all times while on the Coral Gables campus from Monday, September 27, through Thursday, September 30. Faculty, staff, and students without proper identification may be stopped by security personnel and asked to leave campus. Faculty, staff, and students who do not have a 'Cane Card are strongly urged to obtain one now in Allen Hall, Room 111.

There is no charge for an initial 'Cane Card. If you have lost your 'Cane Card, a replacement costs $15. Lanyards will be distributed at various locations on campus, including University of Miami parking garages, parking lots, the food court, and events attended by UM faculty, staff, and students. In addition, individual University departments and divisions also will distribute lanyards with plastic holders to employees.

Access to Buildings
The University of Miami's Wellness Center will be closed from Monday, September 27, through Thursday, September 30. Group exercise and yoga classes will be held in the University Center ballroom during those dates. For class times and information, call 305-284-8500. In addition, Wellness Center members with proper identification may use the University Center pool from September 27 to 30.

The Wellness Center will reopen on Friday, October 1.

Mail and Delivery
Due to street closures, mail (United States Postal Service) and package delivery (UPS, FedEx, DHL, Airborne) will be suspended at the following locations on Thursday, September 30:

• Residential Colleges (Mahoney, Pearson, Hecht, Stanford, and Eaton) and Student Apartments
• Wellness Center
• Convocation Center
• School of Architecture
• Fred C. and Helen Donn Flipse Building (Department of Public Safety, Parking and Transportation Services, Department of Psychology, Sociology Research Center)
• Department of Theatre Arts (located in Hecht Residential College)
• Normal deliveries will resume on Friday, October 1.

Bookstore
The Whitten University Book Store will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 30. The bookstore is selling debate merchandise - including T-shirts, tote bags, pens, magnets, and buttons - at its University Center location. It will also sell debate-related merchandise, as well as University of Miami-themed goods, to the visiting corps of media at the Debate Press Hall (the Wellness Center) September 27 to 30, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and on October 1, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Attending the Debate
The Commission on Presidential Debates makes all decisions about the number of spectators allowed in debate venues. Attendance at the presidential debate at the University of Miami will be extremely limited. President Shalala has determined that available seats will be distributed to students through a seat-application process.

Post Office
The University Center Post Office will be open during normal operating hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., during the week of the debate.

Dining
The Food Court, residential dining halls, and all retail operations will maintain normal operating hours during the week of the debate.
