BGS Admissions Criteria:

  1. Graduated from high school at least four (4) years ago
  2. Cumulative GPA of 2.2 on all previous college work
  3. U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  4. Not enrolled in another school or college at the University of Miami

Students admitted and enrolled in the Bachelor of General Studies may not transfer into any other undergraduate University of Miami school or college.

Step Two: Create your Cane ID

Create your CaneID

This is your personal ID for the University of Miami. You will create a unique username and UM ID number. Your CaneID logs you into multiple University of Miami secure websites.

  1. Go to the following website to create a new CaneID.
  2. If you already have a CaneID and need to reset your password click here.
  3. Please keep a record of this important information:
    • UM ID number – This is an 8-digit number that starts with a “C” which is used instead of a Social Security Number
    • CaneID username
    • CaneID password
  4. For additional CaneID help, contact the UM Information Technology Help Desk:
    • Call (305) 284-6565, option #2, or email caneid@miami.edu
    • Hours: Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Step Three: APPLY Online and Submit the $75.00 Nonrefundable Application Fee

  1. Fill out the Online Application
  2. Save the application into PDF format and forward it to our office via email: bgs@miami.edu
  3. If you are NOT a UM Employee visit the Application Fee payment page.
  4. Scroll down and click "ENROLL NOW" in order to pay for the application fee online.*
  5. Click "Check Out Now" to proceed to payment.
  6. Click "New User" underneath the Login button. You will create a login with your personal email address and a unique password in order to complete the billing process below (this is separate from the CaneID login you just created).
  7. Once you fill in personal information and UMID (the 8-digit number that starts with a "C", received when creating your CaneID), you will be directed to a secure payment processing site to input your billing and credit card information.

*Please note that submitting your application fee does not guarantee acceptance into the BGS program. Your complete application will be reviewed when all application materials and application fee are received by the BGS office. The admission decision will be sent by mail from the University of Miami, Office of Admission.

Step Four: Request previous transcripts

Request that official transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities are sent to the Office of Admission. Official transcripts must come directly from the institution. Students who are attending college for the first time (or who have fewer than 30 college credits) should provide an official high school transcript or copy of GED scores. Financial Assistance

If you are applying for financial assistance you should contact the Office of Financial Assistance at (305) 284-5212. Students who wish to apply for financial assistance must first be accepted as a degree-seeking student.
