UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI PRESIDENT DONNA E. SHALALA’S STATEMENT ON THE VIRGINIA TECH TRAGEDY

The entire University of Miami community was shocked and saddened to hear of the terrible tragedy on the Virginia Tech campus this morning.

I have sent condolences to President Charles Steger and the Virginia Tech community on behalf of our University family.

The University of Miami will hold a candlelight vigil at 9 p.m. Wednesday on The Rock to show solidarity with our fellow Atlantic Coast Conference school.

As always, our counseling center is available for students and is available after hours as needed.

We have put our security and police on all of our campuses on alert. We have increased our on-duty police patrols on the Coral Gables campus.

The University of Miami’s extensive crisis plan is constantly updated and reviewed to ensure the safety of our Coral Gables campus.

We want to remind those on our campus of the more than 50 blue light phones that can be utilized at a moment’s notice to contact University Police. The Medical and Rosenstiel campuses also have emergency procedures.

To report an emergency on campus, please call University Police at 305-284-6666.

Any parents or students with any specific questions are urged to contact the Vice President of Student Affairs’ Office at 305-284-4922.
