A meeting held on September 30, 2013 focused on Undergraduate Research Opportunities within the College of Engineering (CoE) and within the various Departments of the College of Engineering (Click here for PPT presentation). Undergraduate research positions advertised during this meeting are open to undergraduate students regardless of engineering major. As mentioned during the meeting, there are 3 ways to participate in research. These include:
- On a Volunteer Basis. Students volunteers will need to fill out volunteer forms.
- As part of a course. Each CoE Department has an undergraduate research course and students, with advisor’s permission, can sign up for 1, 2, or 3 research credits.
- As part of a job that is paid on an hourly basis
Once you identify a research opportunity there are two things that need to be completed:
- In order to track your participation in research we ask that ALL undergraduate researchers sign up and complete the online application form at: Office of Undergraduate Research - Online Application. If there is a particular research mentor that you are interested in working with, indicate this in the “Areas of Interest” section of the application.
- Training in RCR and COI:
- Register for the corresponding courses in the responsible conduct of research (RCR). More information about registering and taking the RCR is available at the CoE RCR website.
- In addition to RCR training, all researchers are to complete a two part process that addresses possible conflicts of interest. The first part is an on-line training module in conflicts of interest that can be accessed at CITI COI Training site. The second part is completing a disclosure. The disclosure forms can be accessed at DPS site.
Research opportunities that are considered to be particularly prestigious include:
- NSF-REUs (National Science Foundations, Research Experiences for Undergraduates). There are 2 types of NSF-REUs and they are typically paid positions. One type is associated with single research grants that are awarded to the University through an individual Professor’s efforts. The other type are “site” REUs which are awards made to a particular University to host a larger group of students for work on several different research projects. The “site” REUs typically take place during the summer and usually require that the undergraduate student travel to the University hosting the site. The “site” REUs typically provide stipends that help offset the cost of housing. Announcements for “site” NSF-REUs are typically released between the December and February preceding the corresponding summer. - NSF-GRFP (NSF – Graduate Research Fellowship Program). These awards fund graduate school, including MS and PhD degrees. These awards are highly prestigious and are awarded to the student and can “follow” the student depending upon where they go to graduate school. To be competitive, students are highly recommended to work with a faculty member in developing their application. Deadlines for applications is typically sometime in November.
