A vibrant student community promotes learning and leadership for a lifetime. The campaign will raise $21 million to support Division of Student Affairs initiatives including:

New Student Activity Center

$15 million

To meet the need for expanded facilities, the University is constructing a new student activities center adjacent to the existing University Center. The two facilities will complement each other in providing space for students to socialize, meet, and interact. A renovated patio area will tie the new student activities center to the existing University Center, while optimizing the view of scenic Lake Osceola.  To learn more about the New Student Activity Center click here.

The Center for Student Leadership

$1 million

The Center for Student Leadership encourages students to lead with character, integrity, and competence by bringing faculty, staff, alumni, and civic and corporate leaders together to discuss issues of leadership. The center currently relies on donations to coordinate all its programs. Through the Momentum Campaign, the University is raising funds for an endowment that will allow the center to further develop its leadership summit, workshops and leadership clearinghouse, and resource center. These funds will also help the center expose students to new leadership trends, exercises, and theories; allow it to purchase new training and resource materials; and provide funding for its three recognition programs: the University of Miami Student Leader of the Month Award, the Edward T. Foote II Award for Excellence in Student Leadership, and Celebration of Involvement Luncheon.

PIER 21—The Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Education

$1 million

There is little argument against the gravity and severity of alcohol and other drug issues facing today’s college student. The UM Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Education is committed to confronting this challenge by offering education, intervention services, and support to students. In order to better meet the needs of UM students, the center requires an endowment that will permanently cover the costs associated with campus-wide programming and referral support for students. These funds will allow the center to hire a certified substance abuse counselor, provide support for peer educators, enhance curriculum to address alcohol and drug abuse, bring experts to campus, create “Canes Take Control,” which helps students to make the right decisions regarding alcohol and drugs in their lives, and support the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week and Safe Spring Break Week. These programs and services will greatly enhance the University’s ability to assist students in facing the increasing challenges presented by alcohol and drugs.

Presidents’ Lecture Series

$4 million

As a joint initiative of the Office of the President and the Division of Student Affairs, in conjunction with the presidents of the leading student organizations at the University, this lecture series will bring to campus four prominent world and national leaders each year who will conduct lectures and workshops with students and members of the University community. This series will enrich campus life by exposing students to renowned leaders from a variety of disciplines, create interaction and meaningful exchanges among students, faculty and staff, and foster greater community on campus. Visit the Presidents' Lecture Series website.

For additional information about the lecture series, contact: Norman C. Parsons Jr., Director of Development for Student Affairs, at 305-284-4566.
