Applying for Loans | Graduate Below are the loan application and eligibility requirements. Use the checklist provided to make sure you submit all of the required forms and documents on time.

First-time Borrowers
To qualify for a loan, the following must be completed:
Apply for and be accepted into the University as a degree-seeking student
This applies to new and students seeking readmission to the University.
Complete the FAFSA Online

Request a FAFSA PIN at
FAFSA may be completed as early as January 1, prior to the preferred filing deadline of April 15
Submit Master Promissory Note
Complete Entrance Counseling
The Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling Session requirements must be completed via Note that "Financial Awareness Counseling", which provides tools and information to help students understand financial aid and manage their finances, does not meet the federal requirements for completing the Entrance Counseling.
Register with Selective Services (Male students age 18-24 only)

Summer Loans
To qualify for a summer loan, in addition to the steps above, the following must be completed
Complete and submit an online request form (available when Summer Registration begins).

General Eligibility Requirements for Educational Loans:
To be eligible for the loan programs listed below, as student (and parent in the case of the Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) must meet all of the following criteria:
  • Be accepted to the University of Miami as a degree-seeking student
  • Have a valid Social Security Number
  • Not be in default of a loan and/or owe a refund
  • Be enrolled at least half-time and make satisfactory progress toward a degree
  • Register with the Selective Service system if you are a male between the ages of 18 and 24
  • Be enrolled at least half-time for summer loans. An undergraduate student needs to be enrolled during Summer I and/or Summer II with a minimum of 6 credits and a graduate student needs at least 2 credits.

    Policies and Procedures
    Master Promissory Notes
    If awarded a Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, Graduate PLUS Loan, a student must submit a Master Promissory Note (MPN). Failure to submit a MPN may result in withholding of loan disbursement.

    MPNs are completed online at except for Perkins and Nursing Loans. Perkins MPNs can be completed online at Students will be sent an email requesting completion of MPN. Additional information on MPNs can be obtained at the Office of Student Account Services.

    Loans are awarded to Graduate students assuming a standard full time Cost of Attendance. At the start of each term we will adjust each student’s Cost of attendance based on their actual tuition costs and if necessary decrease a student’s financial aid. Requests to increase already awarded loans due to an increase in Cost of Attendance must be in writing from a UM e-mail address. Students can email for these requests.

    By accepting an offered Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan you are authorizing the University of Miami to send your information to the Department of Education for credit approval.

    There is a limit on the maximum period of time (measured in academic years) that you can receive Direct Subsidized Loans. In general, you may not receive Direct Subsidized Loans for more than 150% of the published length of your program.
