As engineers pursue an academic program in their chosen discipline, practical experience is an invaluable part of their education. The University of Miami College of Engineering fosters opportunities for students to participate in cooperative and internship programs throughout their time here at the College. The University of Miami College of Engineering strongly believes any corporate partner deserves access to our most outstanding students. We also strive to provide enriching experiences that meet student needs. Therefore our career development office works with students and employers to ensure a good pairing of skills and experience. We provide counseling and referrals to students, referral and position posting assistance for employers and can also assemble a package of specifically selected individual information as needed. Below is a general description of the programs and how they are implemented:

Co-Operative programs
Alternating co-ops entail the student working full time at a facility for a term, then attending the University full time for the following term. Since the University of Miami operates on a semester system, this means students are available for alternating periods (June-December or January-August) and during the summer intersession (June-August). In parallel co-ops the students is simultaneously working at the company and attending University classes. From an academic standpoint, we do not recommend that students make more than a 15-20 hour weekly work commitment. For either arrangement students receive a notation on their permanent transcript, indicating successful completion of the cooperative program. The College of Engineering does not offer academic credit for cooperative or internship participation.

Summer Internships
Summer Internships are an experiential learning opportunity which has proven to be very popular with University of Miami students. Students not attending summer session(s) are available for internship opportunities from mid-May until the end of August allowing a 3 month commitment. Often employers seek students following completion of the freshman or sophomore year of studies in order to invite them for repeated work rotations over several summers.

Salaries
Generally both internships and co-op programs are on a paid basis, although the salary arrangements are flexible and the experience is the primary benefit from the students’ viewpoint. Although students will be utilized at more elementary skill levels in a pure engineering sense, it is highly beneficial to allow them the exposure to technical innovations or processes involved in the firms’s operations. For an employer the primary benefit is the chance to develop a promising engineering talent. Many if not most of our corporate program participants work with the expectation they will eventually be able to extend an offer of full time employment, usually upon graduation.

Summer Research Opportunities
Many students participate in research programs at a diverse set of national and international universities during the summer or at University of Miami facilities during the academic year. Through programs such as the REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) students attain skills in the practical application of their theoretical knowledge. The University of Miami College of Engineering supports research experiences through referrals to the Office of Undergraduate Research, the national rosters such as the National Science Foundation REU program and direct referrals by faculty and researchers both at the University of Miami and other institutions.
