Ann Masterman

Ann Masterman

Admission representative for Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Oklahoma

"It is extremely important for students and parents to visit college campuses throughout their college search. The campus visit can give a prospective student a realistic idea of what life is like as a college student on that campus. Sometimes a school may be very different in actuality than what it seems like on paper and through its Web site. Visiting the campus in person is the only way to know for sure before making that important decision!"

Hometown: Worcester, Massachusetts
Favorite Place on Campus: The Rathskeller: It's a great place to relax outside and get a bite to eat with a gorgeous view of the lake!
Best part about being a Cane: The Weather!

Jazmane Morgan

Jazmane Morgan
Admission representative for Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia

"I encourage students to reread their essay before submitting it with the application. Having a variety of people read it will help identify any grammatical errors they may have missed."

Hometown: Stone Mountain, Georgia
Favorite place on campus: The reading room in the Communication Building
Best part about being a Cane: The diversity one is able to experience is fantastic. Not only does UM have an excellent academic background, it holds its promise that 'Education Meets the World.' Although I am not a native Floridian, as a former UM undergrad, I truly understand the meaning of 'The storm is coming! Go CANES!'

Alex Ramos

Alexander Ramos
Admission representative for Massachussetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont

"Students should not be discouraged about applying to any school because they believe the school is too expensive. I encourage students to decide which school to attend after she/he has received the acceptance letters. Premature decision making may never allow certain options. It is difficult to accurately predict if a student will be accepted and/or what the financial aid package will be."

Hometown: Miami, Florida
Favorite place on campus: The palm tree lined entrance to the Law School– it just looks like the entrance to a grandiose place.
Best part about being a Cane: The feeling that as a former student and current employee, I am an intrinsic part of the University.

Jim Sullivan

Jim Sullivan
Admission representative for Legacy Admission, Home Schooled Students

"To the parents, I advise that there are many criteria to consider when selecting a college. Having your child answer these three questions for each school they are considering might help them make their final decision. 1. Will they be happy? (What makes them happy? And how does that differ at each campus?) 2. Will they be successful? (How do they define success both in and outside of the classroom? How will that differ with each school?) 3. What will they (you) have to show for your investment? (The college experience is not only a financial investment, but also an investment of our time. How different will your student be after their college experience? How prepared will they be for the next phase of their life?)"

Hometown: Reading, Pennsylvania
Favorite Spot on Campus: An open parking “spot” when I’m running late
Best part about being a CANE: Bleeding orange and green

Ultimately, college will be a major life experience for your child, and you want them to be happy."

Elissar Kurban

Elissar Kurban
Admission representative for India; Middle East; North African; Central Asian regions

"Students should consider the importance of education within a diverse setting; our world is turning into a global village! They need to be prepared to interact and communicate effectively with people from different parts of the world. Diversity enriches the educational experience in many ways; it promotes personal growth, it fosters mutual respect, and it erases stereotyped preconceptions. We learn more about different cultures by interacting with those whose experiences, beliefs, and perspectives are different from our own."

Best part about being a Cane: Being part of such a diverse and dynamic community gives me a strong feeling of belonging. No matter which part of the world you come from, at UM you find a home away from home.
