Join Us In Celebrating the Renovation of the Gifford Arboretum
What: The University of Miami will celebrate the restoration of the John C. Gifford Arboretum, a natural space treasure that was devastated during the 2005 hurricane season. Free admission and parking.
Who: University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala will give opening remarks, followed by the Twentieth Gifford Arboretum lecture, presented by Dr. Julie S. Denslow, research ecologist with the USDA Forest Service.
When/Where: Thursday, March 20
- 6:00 p.m. A guided tour of the Arboretum.
- 7:00p.m. President Shalala’s opening remarks, room 145 in the Cox Science Building, 1301 Memorial Drive, University of Miami.
- 7:10 p.m. Lecture “Weeds in Paradise” room 145 in the Cox Science Building, 1301 Memorial Drive, University of Miami.
- 8:00 p.m. Reception in the lobby of the Cox Science Building, 1301 Memorial Drive, University of Miami.
The Gifford Arboretum is located in the Coral Gables campus, near the intersection of San Amaro Drive and Robbia Avenue.
Why: This event celebrates the extensive refurbishing and replanting of the Gifford Arboretum, following the severe damage caused by the 2005 hurricane season. In addition to being a unique academic resource, the arboretum provides a tranquil and beautiful place for students and faculty to retreat from the hustle and bustle of life on campus. The Gifford Arboretum Annual Lecture is part of the CETroB lecture series. The Montgomery Botanical Center and the Kampong of the National Tropical Botanical Garden are co-sponsors of this event
