University of Miami Continues to Encourage Student Activism on Campus
Events Planned for Florida Primary on January 29
CORAL GABLES, FL –On January 29th, Florida’s Primary day, there will be more than just voting going on at the University of Miami Polling Center. UM students involved with Council for Democracy, Young Democrats, College Republicans and Get Out the Vote will join together to hold a block party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of the BankUnited Center for the entire UM community and citizens assigned to the campuses’ polling center. There will be free food and t-shirts, as well as a DJ and Sebastian the Ibis present at the event.
Precinct 640, located at UM’s BankUnited Center, 1245 Dauer Drive, boasts 1,488 registered voters, of those, almost 1,000 are between the ages of 18-29, 540 are registered Democrats, 419 are registered Republicans and 528 are registered as Other, according to the Miami Dade County Elections Department.
The university will have a shuttle bus travelling back and forth to the University Center and the BankUnited Center throughout the day for the students. In addition, the student-run organizations will be passing out information regarding the different candidates and voter registration.
The day will conclude with a Primary Results Watch Party at 7 p.m. in the lower lounge of the UC for all UM students. Free pizza and t-shirts will be provided.
