
- Always take suicidal comments seriously (Do not think that someone just "wants attention")
- Listen to the person without judging them (Avoid the urge to problem solve)
- Offer hope and let them know that help is available
- Ask the person directly if they are suicidal/having suicidal thoughts
- Express your concerns and that you care
- Encourage the person to seek professional help and offer to assist with this or to go with the person
- Help them to identify reasons to live
- Tell other people (RA, RC, Administrator, Faculty, Counselor, etc. if someone is suicidal (Never promise to keep it a secret/confidential!)
- Call for professional help immediately to make an assessment of the person (Do not handle the situation by yourself)
- If they are in immediate danger call the UM Police Department or 911
- Stay with the suicidal person until help arrives
