Program Information
Since its modest beginning in 1952 the Leonard M. Miller School of
Medicine has grown at a phenomenal rate into the second busiest health
care center in the nation. Located in downtown Miami at the University
of Miami/Jackson Medical Center, the School is ranked among the top 25
medical centers in the country, and features cutting edge research
funded by $200 million in annual funding for nearly 1,200 research
projects. In this stimulating and supportive environment, exciting and
challenging opportunities abound for students seeking training in a
variety of programs, including the M.D. program, the combined M.D./Ph.D.
program, the Masters programs in Public Health (MPH,MSPH), the D.P.T and
Ph.D. Programs in Physical Therapy and Ph.D. research programs in
biomedical science. For more information about these programs, please

The Miller School of Medicine is located on the medical campus next to
Jackson Memorial Hospital in the Civic Center area of Miami. Most of the
teaching facilities are located in the Rosenstiel Medical Sciences
Building and the Glaser Medical Research Building, and include newly
renovated state-of-the-art lecture halls, teaching laboratories, the
Glaser Computer Laboratory, and 12 brand new patient examination and
small group learning rooms. The medical library receives more than 1,800
periodicals and holds more than 200,000 volumes; additional resources
are available in the University libraries on the Coral Gables campus.
The more than 1,000 faculty members that comprise the departments of the
Miller School of Medicine combine excellence in teaching with research
leadership in their respective fields, with many achieving significant
national and international recognition. Twenty-five percent of faculty
members are Ph.D.'s involved in basic science and translational
research. Faculty are carefully selected and many currently hold or were
previously awarded Research Career Development Awards of the National
Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Heart Association or the
American Cancer Society (ACS).
With two newly constructed modern research facilities and plans for more
on the way, you have at your disposal all the tools needed for cutting
edge research. Faculty laboratories are well equipped for state-of the-
art research and Additional shared facilities include those for DNA and
peptide synthesis, protein sequencing and amino acid analysis, DNA
microarrays, proteomics, monoclonal antibody screening and production,
fluorescence-activated cell sorting, scanning and transmission electron
microscopy, transgenics and computers for the analysis of protein
structure. Research opportunities are also readily available at
nationally recognized research centers on campus, including: the William
L. McKight Vision Research Center of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute,
the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, The National Parkinson's Research
Center, the Diabetes Research Institute, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer
Center, Mailman Center for Child Development, the Batchelor Children's
Research Institute, and the VA Medical Center.
