University of Miami Public Transit Program
In keeping with an ongoing commitment to implement "green" practices into University operations, the University of Miami is offering discounted Miami-Dade Metropass and Tri-rail pass distribution to full-time University of Miami faculty and staff. This effort is designed to reduce parking demand and traffic congestion on the campuses and municipal roadways and promote more affordable and less stressful commuting options.
Now, effective June 1, UM will offer additional incentives aimed at promoting public transit among full-time faculty and staff. The free or reduced price transit passes will include Metro rail, Metrobuses, "Park and Ride" express buses, and Tri-rail. On the Coral Gables campus, the new Public Transit Program will be administered by Parking & Transportation Services.
All full-time employees interested in the public transportation program must read and comply with the provisions of the Public Transit Program policy. Rates, restrictions, and other requirements can be found in this policy and at the websites of Miami-Dade Transit and Tri-rail.
Metro-rail and tri-rail passes are good from the 1st day of the month to the last day of the month. A new pass must be obtained each month. You will not need to submit a new election form each month. Those who wish to join the program for the first time must electronically complete, print, sign, and submit the employee election form at the links found here by the 10th day of the month for a transit pass effective the first day of the next month.
Public transportation passes will be available for pick up during the last three working days of each month. Each department will designate one representative to pick up the passes for their department at the Check Distribution window in the Ashe Building. Once the department representative accepts the passes the department will be responsible for the passes. Check distribution will not individually release passes to any employee.
Under the new program, effective June 1, transit fees will be deducted in the month of your pass. The monthly deduction will occur as follows:
o Biweekly paid employees will have the premium deducted from the 2nd paycheck of the month. The June premium will be deducted on the June 19th biweekly paycheck. o Monthly paid employees will have the premium deducted from their paycheck received at the end of the month.
If you wish to discontinue your public transportation pass, you must complete and forward the cancellation form to the Parking & Transportation Services. The form must be received by the 10th of each month in order to cancel your pass for the following month.
Lost transit passes cannot be replaced and are not refundable.
Tri-rail subscribers must first obtain an EDP (Employer Discount Program) card in order to participate and use a discounted Tri-rail pass. The Benefits Office will apply for the card on your behalf and have the card mailed to your home address. Please be sure your home address is correct in MyUM. If you already have and EDP card, please send a photocopy with your election form.
Please visit the South Florida Commuter Services website and read about their emergency ride home program, carpools and vanpools. The Emergency Ride Home (ERH) program provides free taxi service in emergency situations for registered commuters in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
