College of Engineering Internship Tips

Looking for An Internship?

A Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Started

A RESUME IS THE FIRST STEP!

  • See the Sample Resume  for format, prepare your draft then upload it using the Toppel Center website at http://www.miami.edu/toppel and the CaneZone link. You can upload it online or go to Toppel (in UC) to work with the technical support staff.
  • Once you’ve completed and submitted your resume for review, also bring it to the CoE placement office and have it checked.
  • Make changes/corrections, and follow up to be sure it is uploaded onto Toppel system (this is the database the placement offices and recruiters use to find you!)
  • IF YOU NEED HELP GETTING STARTED CLICK ON THE LINK TO ACCESS A SAMPLE RESUME.

USE ALL RESOURCES POSSIBLE!

  • Toppel Center Online listings via the website www.miami.edu/toppel
  • CoE Career Planning and Placement Office at 208 McArthur Annex Bldg (305-284-2058 or 305-284-2022) or email the director, Ann Helmers, to ahelmers@miami.edu.
  • Online search engines (www.google.com , www.monster.com , etc) and DON’T FORGET COMPANY WEBSITES!
  • Faculty members, student organizations (very important; recruiters love to work with student groups), advisors.
  • Personal contact: family business/technology acquaintances, relatives, and friends.

BE PERSISTENT AND FOLLOW UP ON ALL LEADS!

  • Promptly write thank-you letters after a contact (should be emailed within 24 hours, or mailed within 48 hours).
  • Make follow-up contacts: keep writing, emailing or phoning—don’t submit a resume or make a contact and assume they will get back to you!
  • Use your CoE business cards; these will set you apart from students at many other schools, and provide a very professional image for you.

DON’T GET DISCOURAGED!

  • Employers continue searching for interns through the spring and even into summer; don’t assume if you aren’t placed early you won’t be.
  • Keep making contacts, following leads and pursuing opportunities. Your internship search is in YOUR hands!
