Curriculum: An Interdisciplinary Approach
(30 credits)

The MAIA core curriculum integrates the academic study of international relations, international and public administration, policy analysis and advocacy, international economics, international organizations, strategic thinking and negotiation, world religions and cultures, stressing the growing importance of communications media in the conduct of international administration. Practical experience is emphasized, and requirements include a practicum project.

Students in the MAIA program will be required to participate in a 6 day intensive Technology Bootcamp and a 2 day intensive Finance and International Operations Bootcamp.

As international professionals, MAIA graduates need to become fluent in a second language. Students who need to brush up on their language skills, can add-on one of UM’s highly regarded accelerated language courses.

At the beginning of the program , students are asked to declare a world region of interest and wherever possible will be paired with a faculty mentor, an expert in that region. Throughout the program of study, projects and research will focus on student's chosen region of interest.

Concentration specializations are available in:

  • Regional Studies (China, Russia, Latin America, European Union [in Prague])
  • Public Administration
  • International Economics/Business
  • Public Health
  • Communication
  • Information Technology
  • Marine Affairs and Policy
  • World Religions

MAIA advisors will work with students to choose electives appropriate to their area of career interest.
