Eligibility

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital provides clinical externships (electives) for students enrolled in medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). However, medical students enrolled at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine are given first priority for all rotations. Students enrolled at other LCME-accredited medical schools may participate in electives only if space is available. Only students who have satisfactorily completed all of the third year clerkships (rotations) and who are in good academic standing at their own medical school will be accepted.

International students and students enrolled in foreign medical schools are not accepted for clinical externships. They may, however, be accepted as observers for clinical experiences. Observership status means that visiting students may not have any direct patient contact or be responsible in any measure for patient care. They may observe on rounds, follow resident and attending physicians and may participate in departmental conferences. Students on observer status will not be issued a grade or any form of written evaluation of their performance on an elective.

Application Process

Students qualifying for an elective at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine should contact the appropriate departmental representative for an application. A completed application with the required supporting documents should be sent directly to the department in which the student wants to work. Accepted applicants will be charged a non-refundable processing fee of $US50, payable to the Department of Medical Education. Payment may be made by personal check drawn on a US bank, cashiers check, or money order. Payment is due on the first day of the elective rotation.

Required documents for all visiting students

• Completed visiting student application
• Letter of good standing from dean of current medical school
• Official copy of medical school transcript indicating successful completion of all core clinical clerkships
• Letter of acceptance from the hosting department at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine
• University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Observership Agreement and Release
• Identification badge application form
• Proof of immunizations
• Proof of personal health insurance (photocopy of current health insurance ID card or letter from insurance carrier
• Proof of liability insurance (visiting students from LCME accredited schools only)

Additional Requirements for International Students

• Copy of passport and form I-94
• Letter of Acceptance from hosting department at the UMMSM
• All submitted documentation must be presented in English. Translations into English must be certified. No documents in a language other than English will be accepted.
