S.A.F.E. (Self-Defense Awareness & Familiarization Exchange)

Violent crimes are often crimes of opportunity; when you remove the element of opportunity, you reduce the risk of attack. 90% of self-defense is mental preparedness; the other 10% is physical.

S.A.F.E. (Self-Defense Awareness & Familiarization Exchange) is a 1 to 2 hour program that provides teenage and adult women with personal safety information and an introduction to the physical aspects of self-defense.  Prevention, options, strategies, and physical techniques are the key components of the S.A.F.E. Program.

S.A.F.E. was developed as a precursor/ introduction to the 12 hour R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) program; both programs were created by the National Self-Defense Institute.

The University of Miami Police Department offers S.A.F.E. classes periodically throughout the year.  Please check this webpage for upcoming classes.  Interested participants must pre-register by contacting the UM Police Department Crime Prevention Office at jpepper@miami.edu or (305) 284-1105.  At this time, there is a $5 charge per student associated with the class to cover the cost of copyrighted materials distributed to students.  All classes are taught by N.S.D.I. S.A.F.E. Certified Instructors.  Private S.A.F.E. classes may be requested by student or employee groups/ organizations of 10 or more people.

For additional information, please contact UM Police Department Crime Prevention Office at jpepper@miami.edu or (305) 284-1105.
