Inventory Property
Theft of computers, computer equipment, LCD projectors, and other portable property is a problem that has been plaguing educational institutions across the country.
Sometimes, property is recovered that cannot be returned to it's rightful owner because law enforcement personnel cannot determine who the owner is. This is why it is so important that each department maintain a list of its equipment and serial numbers. The serial numbers can be entered into State and National computer systems if the property is stolen. If the property is recovered the owner can be identified from these State and National databases, and the property can be returned.
If your department does not have a current database, use the link below to get a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to track your equipment records. If any of the items are stolen, the serial number and other pertinent information can be added to the police report. The time to act is now, before something gets stolen.
After opening the file, click file, save as.., choose a name and location and save the file to your local drive for your own use.
After completing the inventory, keep a copy in your office and a backup in a safe location in case it is ever needed.
Don't forget to update your list and backups as new items are purchased and old items are discarded.
